No. 1 Green Summer Bowling on No 1 Green

The Bowling Club was formed in 1942 when the Fendalton Company of the Home Guard disbanded. The Home Guardsmen had developed such an “esprit de corps” during the years that they wanted to keep in touch with one another. From this desire sprang the idea of forming the Fendalton Bowling Club.

There had been two previous attempts to form a club. Both had failed, but with the Home Guard as its core, the inaugural meeting on 19th June 1944 proved a success. Nineteen of the thirty-three men who attended were former members of the Home Guard.

Initially the club had one green, a second being developed in 1949. In 1954 the No.1 Green was the venue for the finals of the New Zealand Championships.

Amalgamation with the Fendalton Women’s Bowling Club in 2004 had brought in another green. however this has been sold to Bowls Canterbury who have based their operation in the associated pavilion. This green has been kindly made available on special occasions. All greens have received high praise and are rated as good as any in the country.

No. 2 Green Summer Bowling on No 2 Green

The Club pavilion is well appointed with separate dining hall and lounge facilities.

All greens measure 36.6m x 36.6m and are surfaced in cotula-maniatoto, a basic water weed which originated in the colder climate of the South Otago Coast.
